Gray hair. It -- along with wrinkled skin, dark circles under the eyes and a sagging body -- is an often unavoidable sign of aging that many women dread.

Every day, salons are filled with clients of all ages who fork over anywhere from $40 to $150 or more a month to cover the unwelcomed, and many times premature, evidence of "looking old." For those women who don't go for such extravagance, it doesn't get much better. Regular hair coloring means a visit to the drug store and a messy, smelly night in front of the mirror in their bathrooms, hoping against hope they didn't miss any spots in the back ... again.

But when is enough, enough? When, after years of warding off the wicked white strands, of fighting back the growing gray roots, does a woman embrace her natural hair color? And how does she do so gracefully?

Put simply, going gray is a process -- a process many more women start than ever finish -- and it all begins with a bold decision.

In the 14 years that Danielle Keasling, owner of Salon Karma in Bluffton, has been a hairstylist, and of all the hundreds of clients who have started the process of going gray, only a handful have followed through with it.

"People talk about it all the time," Keasling said.

When a client shows interest in letting her hair go gray, Keasling first explains that it might not turn out as they envision. Once fine hair turns gray, it can have reflection and shine, but coarse hair tends to be more dull. Because gray hair is more brittle, and the wirey strands are weaker, longer styles often have to be compromised for a shorter cut.

With that, some women abandon the idea before they even start. Some begin going lighter, but then never fully stop coloring their hair. Some allow their hair to go gray only to return to having it colored.

It's not an easy choice. Women fear they will look old. They fear their husbands won't like it and will find them less attractive.

They fear letting go of yet another facet of their youth.

"It's such an emotional thing," Keasling said. "Hair is so emotional for women, period."

MAKING THE DECISION

Prompted by an article in the December 2012 issue of Vogue about allowing hair to go gray, Keasling's client of nine years, Nikki Sandmaier, 41, asked about doing that herself.

But by "gray," she meant a beautiful silver-white.

With dark brown hair and only about 25 percent of it going gray, the Hilton Head Island resident was a long way from the women she saw on the pages of the magazine with all-white hair.

To give herself an idea of what gray hair would look like on her, Sandmaier tried on a wig cut in a shoulder-length bob. Salon Karma has dozens of wigs to help clients see what a particular style or color will look like on them. Sandmaier took a picture with the wig on and showed it to her husband.

"He said it was crazy," she said.

Not only was the gray hair the complete opposite color of her current hair, it was also a foot shorter.

"It presented a totally drastic change," Sandmaier said.

But she didn't think the gray hair aged her and is confident that with a short, trendy haircut she could pull it off at her young age. For now, though, she's leaving the door open on the decision.

"I'm very conflicted," Sandmaier said. "[Danielle and I] decided we'd start lightening my hair, so if I decided to go gray, it would be an easier transition."

EN VOGUE?

Contrary to what the Vogue article might lead readers to believe, going gray is not a trend. Yes, white hair can look stunning and chic, and it can give a woman the confidence to gracefully accept her age, but the reality of achieving this look is not the same for everyone.

Clients bring Keasling pictures into the salon saying, "Look at this woman with beautiful gray hair."

Yes, Keasling responds, look at that woman.

"She's airbrushed. She's 40 years old. She's a model. Her gray hair isn't what is making her beautiful," Keasling said. "I help clients see what they're actually looking at."

Women might envision the shiny, white hair of Savannah native Paula Deen for themselves. But it's not just that silvery-white hair creating the celebrity chef's iconic look. It is the full-bodied hairstyle that is professionally blown dry, teased and curled for maximum height and width. It's also her poreless and wrinkle-free skin at age 66, her piercing blue eyes and Southern-charm smile.

Many women find that gray hair doesn't make them feel more beautiful, and that they end up feeling better with colored hair.

"Looking through magazines, it's a lot of famous people or models (with gray hair) who are professionally done," Keasling said. "Paula Deen would be beautiful whether she had blonde or brown or white hair."

ME GRAY? NEVER

Bluffton resident Linda Papa, 64, waits for her monthly appointment to begin at Salon Karma. Her hair is dark red, the ends colored with thick chunks of orange. She laughs out loud when asked how many colors her hair has seen -- blonde, red, purple, aqua and green.

Would Papa ever consider going gray?

"Never," Papa said. "You can put that in capital letters."

Papa was a hair stylist for 30 years. She saw clients with gray hair, and she saw how it aged them -- something she'd never want for herself.

She considers the time and money required to maintain colored hair a gift.

"I deserve to do (this) for myself," she said.

Like mother, like daughter. When Papa's mother died 14 years ago, she left this world maintaining colored hair all 76 years of her life.

And Papa intends to do the same. In fact, she has left specific instructions to her daughter and to Keasling for when she dies: Don't bury me with gray hair.

'MEN HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ON HAIR'

For men, going gray has different implications, of course.

Silver hair on a man isn't a sign of becoming irrelevant with age, but rather of handsome maturity. Anderson Cooper was placed in People magazine's 2012 "Sexiest Man Alive" issue in a "50 Shades of Gray" feature, alongside Brad Pitt, 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, and "Grey's Anatomy" star Eric Dane. Even Ben Affleck, 40, was spotted sporting the salt-and-pepper look in 2010 on the set of "The Town," which he co-wrote, directed and starred in.

While dating white-haired E! Networks CEO Ted Harbert, talk show host Chelsea Handler told E! News that, along with the Grand Canyon and lean corned-beef, she ranked the "silver fox" as one of God's most beautiful creations.

Gray hair makes a man look more distinguished, and there is much less shame involved. Keasling said that at Salon Karma she does have male clients who color their hair, but estimates they make up less than 10 percent of her gray-fleeing clients.

While men have been given permission by society to let their hair turn salt and pepper, Keasling said it's those same husbands who often play a huge factor in a woman's decision to continue coloring her hair.

"Men have strong opinions on hair, whether they want to admit it or not." Keasling said. "I think it's an age thing. They don't want their wives to age."

'I'D REACHED THAT AGE'

Maureen Greig, 67, of Sun City Hilton Head, began dying her hair when she found her first gray strand at 19 years old.

Forty-six years later, she was dying her hair every four weeks, and even then, her dark brown hair wasn't coming through in the rich, full color she desired.

Fearing that gradually lightening her hair would be too harsh, and that there was a risk some of it would fall out, Greig quit coloring her hair cold turkey.

"I'd reached that age. I'm in my 60s. I saw a few other women with white hair, and it gave me confidence," she said.

As she let her gray hair grow out, her salt-and-pepper hair received strange looks from some people.

"I just tried to ignore it," Greig said.

She received compliments from younger people thinking her two-toned hair was a fashion statement.

But more importantly, she received encouragement from Keasling.

"Danielle just really tried to support me through it," Greig said. "She left [the decision] up to me."

She now wears her white hair proudly, maintaining a shorter, stylish cut. Her husband of 16 years supported her decision.

In fact, he thought it really turned out nice.

The question is whether she will sport a similar look if and when she ties the knot with current love, Ryan Reynolds. Browse more wedding hairstyle ideas.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's Side Braid

Braided hairstyles and beach weddings go hand in hand. This one in particular is stunning because the braid is on the side, which means it will be captured in almost all of your wedding photos. Use firm-holding hairspray to keep things in control as the night unfolds. Browse more wedding updo ideas.

Olivia Wilde's Tousled, Shoulder-Length Waves

A beach wedding hairstyle should be simple and easy, or at least appear that way. Some brides swap out a veil for a fresh flower behind their ear, a look that would totally lend itself to this shoulder-length hairstyle. See more down wedding hairstyle ideas.

Katie Holmes' Messy Bun

A very low-maintenance choice for beach brides is a messy bun. This look is an absolute must if the heat promises to be unforgiving–or you plan on dominating the dance floor all night long. See more wedding updo ideas.

Jessica Biel's Long, Shiny Waves

Justin Timberlake's bride-to-be looks effortless with these soft, shiny curls. Maybe she'll give it a try at her upcoming nuptials to the musician-turned-actor? See more long wedding hairstyle ideas.

Hayden Panettiere's Low, Loose Chignon

A low, sideswept chignon is another choice hairstyle for a beach wedding. The Heroes star rocks the look with big, statement earrings. See more wedding updo ideas.

Kate Beckinsale's Romantic, Half-Up Look

For a half-up look, we adore this brunette Brit's beachy-looking hairstyle choice. She only pulled back the very front, letting the rest of her gorgeous long hair fall down past her shoulders.See more half-up wedding hairstyle ideas.

Kristin Bell's Defined Curls

We're majority crushing on this long, beachy hairstyle. Don't hesitate to go a little "undone" by curling select strands and letting the rest of your tresses simply dry naturally. Learn more wedding hair tips and tricks.

Zoe Saldana's Loose Updo

The Avatar star's twisted updo would be stunning for a beach wedding. It's perfect if you're leaning toward any hair accessories, such as pins, barrettes or a veil. See more wedding updos.

Cameron Diaz's Cropped Sideswept Look

A cropped blonde cut is ideal for a beach wedding hairstyle, and a deep side-part begs for a pretty hair accessory or fresh flower. See more short wedding hairstyle ideas.

SINGAPORE - Hairstylist Ashley Lim is the certified mane man when it comes to local theatre. To date, he has done countless dos for more than 200 productions big and small - not bad for someone who entered the biz back in 1986 as a shampoo boy and "washed my way up to be what I am now", he joked.

While he still maintains his own place, Ashley Salon, there has always been a connection with the stage - having first done the hair for TheatreWorks' Rashomon in the mid-'80s.

His latest hair creations will be seen in W!ld Rice's current pantomime Hansel & Gretel.

"Look out for plenty of colour and wig action," he promised. We hair you loud and clear. MAYO MARTIN

What are the differences between styling hair for the stage and ordinary hairstyling for your non-theatre clients?

Styling for theatre hair onstage is always bigger than in real life. This is because it requires more drama and presence. A good hairstyle will transport an actor back to the past or into the future, and enable him or her to perform better on stage. However, styling for theatre and real life has one thing in common - both must be able to look good all around.

What are some of most memorable styles you've created for theatre?

One of the most memorable would be Forbidden City: The Portrait Of The Empress Dowager, which was a period production that also had a modern feel to it - not to mention that I love doing Chinese period styles. Some of the crazy hairstyles I've done include attaching lights and motors for effects. There was also once where I had to change the actor from an old man into a young man on stage. I had to attach two coloured wigs on him. Some of the craziest, fun shows I've done hairstyling for include the Dim Sum Dollies and Wild Rice pantomimes. What I enjoy most is being able to create so many different styles and also being able to work with such great creative teams, directors and a whole set of wonderful actors.

Is there such a thing as going overboard in hairstyling?

There is no such thing as going overboard or overdoing it when it comes to theatre because it's always bigger than real life. And honestly, hairstyles tell a story of an era so really, there's no such thing as a good or bad hairstyle.

Care to share one golden rule about maintaining a healthy scalp?

Always invest in the right shampoo and conditioner. If you want to know which shampoo will best suit your hair's needs, you must first know the sort of scalp condition you have. Is it oily, or dry, or is it a combination? Knowing these little things will help you make the best hair choices to maintain a healthy scalp. Using the wrong hair care products or overly oily hair styling products is always bad for the scalp.

Which hair products or equipment do you swear by?

For me, one tail comb, a can of hairspray and some hairpins are a must for all shows. Beyond that, I cannot say because it's my own trade secret.

Hansel & Gretel runs until Dec 15, 7.30pm (Tuesday to Sunday) and 2.30pm (weekends), Drama Centre Theatre, National Library Building. Tickets from S to S at Sistic.

Winning gold at the Olympic Games is an achievement of a lifetime. But for Gabby Douglas it was almost overshadowed by stories about her — hair? A quick search of "Gabby Douglas hair" on Google renders an astounding 422,000 results.

At the start of the Summer Olympics, Douglas wore her hair in a not-so-coiffed ponytail, with clips and gel holding it in place. Her hairdo caused an uproar on social media, even making it to the national news. Before long she had secured the services of a professional stylist and her look dramatically changed.

Black women were either appalled by her disheveled look or angry for the misplaced focus on Douglas' hair rather than her athletic achievement. Either way, one thing remained clear: hair is important. And in the black community, the topic has historically been central to image.

Writers, professors and historians have long discussed the social, political and sexual aspects of women's hair. Some, like Tracey Owens Patton, University of Wyoming professor of African American and Diaspora Studies, would argue that a desire to obtain straight hair resulted from the influence of Anglo culture. Chemical relaxers were developed in the early 1900s to assist black women, whose hair is typically coarse, curly or both, in obtaining straight, manageable hair. Many relaxers contain lye, and the FDA warns that any relaxer has the potential to burn the skin, namely the scalp.

Gabby Douglas aside, hair is back in the news. Filmmaker Zina Saro-Wiwa presented a documentary on black women trading in their chemically processed hair for the natural look, focusing on her own decision to do the same. The film was featured in a New York Times story in May, noting that sales of chemical products had dropped 17% between 2006 and 2011 as evidence for a natural hair revolution.

A group of young women in Knoxville aren't only embracing this look, they're meeting together to discuss it.

Dasha Lundy, 32, of East Knoxville, decided to go natural in 2010. Chemical relaxers were causing her hair to thin.

"I watched the movie 'Good Hair' (a 2009 documentary by comedian Chris Rock) and they put the relaxer on a Coke can and it melted, and ever since I've been natural. I cut it and my hair has grown so much," said Lundy.

The thinning hair had affected her confidence and knowing she would need to cut her hair short in order to go natural left Lundy anxious and emotional. "When I cut my hair I cried, and you shouldn't be that way. You shouldn't be that attached," she admitted.

Eventually her angst gave way to a revelation that her hair had been excessively important to her. Lundy began to embrace her natural look.

"I felt liberated, and I'm not less attractive," she said.

Lundy once visited the salon every two months at minimum per visit. Going natural has saved her money and time, but she warns the temptations to buy products and become focused on hair remains.

"Once you go natural you can become a product junky, and it can become frustrating. Everybody is marketing," she said.

Some of her inspiration to keep it real has been from the site curlynikki.com, but her real support comes from a group of friends who gather for a natural hair meet-up to bounce off ideas and enjoy camaraderie.

"People get discouraged and just give up. There's a need to have a meet-up to help others. We can be supportive. It's really about being healthy," she said.

At a recent meet-up among friends several of the women shared their journeys from relaxed to natural.

Robin Curry, 40, of Old North Knoxville has had natural hair since July 2010. Prior to that she had used relaxer since age 8.

Curry maintains the natural look because her scalp was seriously dry, she said. "I even went to see a dermatologist for treatment. It was at that moment that I realized that the chemicals in relaxers contributed to my scalp issues, and I had to make some changes.

"(Natural hair) is not always easy and can be time consuming. There is a process to washing, conditioning and maintaining the hair. You have to figure out what regimen and products work best for your hair, strictly by trial and error. Also, going through the transitioning process may be challenging. I didn't do the big chop; I gradually grew my relaxer out, then cut several inches off. There were many times when I felt extremely frustrated and was ready to give up."

Jena E. Murphy, 24, of West Knoxville, received her first relaxer at age 5 and had her last one a few days shy of her 21st birthday.

"I have accepted my hair as the blessing it is," she said. "My hair is so versatile now. I can wear it in so many ways (afro, curly, wavy, and straight). I have so much peace knowing that I am giving my hair a fair chance to be healthy and grow. … I maintain the look because it is what God truly blessed me with.

"Every ethnic group has special features that make them unique and incredibly special. African Americans are the only ethnic group that has such textured hair. It was never meant to be something to run away from or be ashamed of, but to embrace. I would encourage anyone thinking about going natural to try it. Don't limit yourself by thinking you cannot pull the look off. It's the hair texture God blessed you with, so of course you can pull the look off and look beautiful while doing it."

Tara Davis, 40, of Northwest Knoxville, used a relaxer for as long as she can remember. She began wearing sew-in weave hairstyles or wigs over two years ago before going natural.

Davis recalls reacting to Gabby Douglas' hairstyle. "I was extremely proud of her and her accomplishments but I noticed and commented on her hair and why her mother hadn't done more. I don't believe people should have been so cruel as to post to Facebook and Twitter about it and berate her publicly. And it definitely shouldn't have been on the nightly news. But I noticed."

Despite her reaction, Davis is glad to see the move toward natural hair.

"I see with young girls today that they care and know more about their health than I did at their age. And they are very much into having their own style. The natural style allows them to have that individualism," she said.

Her 16-year-old daughter Lindsay Davis decided to go natural at age 13 after three years of relaxing her hair.

"I think hair is important because you can tell a lot about someone's personality, and because it's a part of what makes us unique," she said. "No one has the same curl pattern or texture, so it is a girl's way of standing out."

Curry thinks natural hair "empowers the black woman to be who she is and not what people think she should look like. There are many people reluctant to go natural because they are scared of the image that it portrays. I just think that it embraces the black woman's self image."

	By Rosanna Turner

Daily Correspondent

If you've never a bad hair day, consider yourself lucky. The best outfit with the brightest smile could all be forgotten if one's hair isn't just so. Some of us loathe our locks, wishing we could wake up one morning and find it curlier, straighter, bouncier, or at least not looking like a rat's nest. But that's why they invented hairstylists, to help us tame our tresses and get us looking like we've just stepped out of a photo shoot for the cover of a glossy fashion magazine. Hairstylists know that hair is not just a bunch of dead follicles that sprout from the head. Hair can be an art form, a way to express one's individuality, or the key ingredient to a great first impression. Let's not forget that doing one's hair can also be a lot of fun. After all the colorful leaves fall, spending October in the mountains can be, and feel, a bit dull. To counteract this, why not try brightening your hair with a new color or style? We asked local hairstylists to give us their suggestions on how to add some flair to your hair this season.

Highlights without the high prices

Ever wondered why one hairstyle becomes more popular than others? Jill Suarez, owner of About Hair and hairstylist at Fusion Hair Studio in Eagle, said most hairstyle trends begin with teenagers in big cities and then spread from there.

“It usually starts from some extreme fashion statement and then becomes trendy,” Suarez said. “When people get tired of seeing the same thing, especially kids, they take their hair and do the opposite to it. Then six months later everyone in Hollywood is doing it, only more polished and more grown up.”

One of the most popular color trends right now is ombre, a technique that involves dying the tips or ends of one's hair a lighter color than your roots. Suarez said the trend started with teens who would bleach or dye their hair and then couldn't afford to re-dye it once their roots grew out. Salons have perfected the ombre technique so that the lighter color at the ends blends in gradually with the darker color near the roots.

“You can go with the fully dipped look or with the highlighted look on the bottom, that way the two colors just melt into each other,” Suarez said.

The ombre effect can be a new twist on regular old highlights and is easier to maintain.

“We've always highlighted the roots,” Suarez said. “But I feel like (because of) the economy, not everyone can afford to keep up with a highlight every four to six weeks. Having the roots get dark on the ends is much more affordable for clients who want to look fashionable but don't have the funds to afford the upkeep.”

Adding texture to your tresses

As a kid, braids were a way to keep one's hair from getting too unruly and minimizing the pain of brushing out knots and snarls before bedtime. Braids are back in a big way and a few trailblazers, or braiders, have created numerous ways to rock a braid without looking childish. Braids are great way to change your hairstyle for a day without having to take a trip to the salon.

“The way (braids) are being done now is a lot more edgy,” Suarez said. “It adds texture to the hair without having to change the hair permanently.”

If one's hair is layered, a simple technique to do is called a “trick bob”, where you take the bottom of your hair, braid it and wrap it, then fluff up the top layers so it makes it look as though your hair is in a bob. If your hair is medium length or longer, Suarez suggests trying what she refers to as a “braid across the front.”

“Starting with a really deep side part, incorporate the hair from the crown and work a braid from one side to the other,” Suarez said. “For someone who doesn't have bangs, this (braid) can create some kind of a bang.”

Creating braids with short hair can be tricky, so Suarez advises playing with the texture by using a sea-salt texturing spray.

“Hair that works for you”

The best way to mess with your mane with minimal effort is to add a fresh accessory. Noni Taylor, owner of Noni's Hair Bar in Edwards, said the new colorful bow-like Emi-Jay hair tie has replaced the standard ponytail holder.

“They're hair ties that don't leave a bump in your hair,” Taylor said. “We sell them here and they fly off the shelf. You can also wear them around your wrist.”

Taylor also said due to Princess Kate Middleton, headbands or small hats adorned with feathers or flowers known as “fascinators” are also all the rage. Rather than hiding one's hair under a big floppy hat, fascinators can top off an outfit, making one look stylish from head to toe.

Both Suarez and Taylor said the popular lifestyle website Pinterest is becoming the main source for those looking for hairstyle tips and tricks.

“I think Pinterest is a phenomenal thing for anybody to follow,” Suarez said. “(It's) drawing in a whole different culture of people and is a great tool to find what you want to find.”

Perhaps the key to making every day a good hair day is to learn to love your locks and work with what you've got.

“I like to do hair that works for you, not hair that you have to work for,” Suarez said.

No one wants to get a haircut and not have anyone notice. If this has happened to you, it might be time to try a new color, style, or accessory with your hair that will not only turn heads, but leaving you feeling like you're the star in the movie of your own life, rather than the sloppy sidekick.

If you’re in the process of growing out your mid length hair into long hair, you’re probably looking for creative ways to style mid length hair that will look great. Trust that you’re not alone and every day millions of women across the country face this same problem. Luckily, there are plenty of great things you can do with your hair while it grows out.

Below, you’ll find three gorgeous hair styles that will help you camouflage your growing hair until it reaches the length you desire.

1.) Ballet Bun – If your hair is an awkward length and is falling in your face constantly, consider doing it up in a ballet bun. To create a ballet bun, gather your hair at the back of your head and twist it tightly. Continue twisting as the hair folds and bends around itself into a bun shape. Tuck the ends under and secure with a hair band. You may need to use bobby pins to secure any pieces that were too short to reach the bun.

Ballet buns can be worn at the base of the neck, the back of the head, or even on the crown. There is no right or wrong way to do a ballet bun, so don’t worry too much about your technique. You can also choose to do a sloppy bun as a more casual variation. If you don’t have a hair band handy, buns can also be secured using any type of stick object, such as chopsticks or even a pencil.

2.) Half-Ponytail. The half-ponytail is an all purpose look that’s great for camouflaging hair that’s being grown out. To get the look, simply gather the top half of your hair in a ponytail at or slightly below the crown of your head. Secure the hair with a flat clip or barrette. If the front of your hair is too short to reach the back, leave it loose or secure it with bobby pins. The half-ponytail look is elegant enough to be worn to work, or casual enough to wear while gardening. The advantage of this look is that your hair stays out of your eyes and looks neatly done.

3.) French braids. French braids are wonderful for people whose hair is too short to do a traditional braid. Usually, it’s easier to have someone else do the french braid for you, but it can be done on your own if nobody is able to assist you. The nature of the french braid makes it easy to neatly gather short hair into one cohesive looking style. Using a small amount of gel or mousse on your hair before you begin making the braid will keep any short ends in place and prevent frizzing.

To create a french braid, simply take a small section of hair from the top of your head and divide it into 3 parts. Begin doing 1 row of a traditional braid. When the first row is finished, use your pinky fingers to add small sections of the remaining hair into the outermost strands of the braid. Complete another row and repeat the process of adding in hair until the braid is finished. With practice, you’ll get to be good at adding the same amount of hair from the right and left sides to the braid.

There are many ways to style mid length hair while you wait for it to grow out. Trimming the ends of your hair regularly will help it grow faster, so you can reach your goal length even quicker. In the meantime, try a few different styles and explore all of your hair options. You probably won’t have hair this length again for a while, so enjoy it while you can!

If you’re a woman over 50, you might not be ready to chop off your youthful locks, but aren’t sure if there are any hairstyles for women over 50 that you’ll like. If you’re still able and willing to care for longer hair, why not wear a style you love, regardless of the intended age? They say that 50 is the new 30, and more women are opting for easy to care for medium-length hair instead of the short styles preferred by their mothers generation. There are plenty of medium length hairstyles for women over 50 that will give you the confidence and look you desire.

If you’ve decided to cut your hair to a medium length, but aren’t sure how to style it, here are some suggestions for easy to care for medium-length hair. There are several variations of each style, and you’ll be surprised how many beautiful, age-appropriate styles there are to choose from.

1.) The bob. A bob is a simple hairstyle that hits at or just below the chin. Bobs are perfect for women with naturally straight locks who don’t want to spend a lot of time fixing their hair in the morning. Any hairdresser will know how to create a bob, so all you have to do is let your stylist know how long you would like it to be.

You can create variations of the simple style by adding in layers, framing the face, shortening the back, and even cutting in bangs. Traditional or side bangs both look great with this simple style. If you’ve always wanted to try getting highlights, this look can help accentuate tasteful highlights, and because it falls in the category of medium length, your highlights may be less expensive than they would be on longer hair.

2.) Long layers. Another simple look is a plain cut with long layers added in. If you have fine or limp hair, long layers will help add movement and bounce. For people with fine or limp hair, shorter styles or shorter chunks of hair help give the illusion of a fluffier, fuller head of hair. The trick to pulling off long layers in medium-length hair is to ask your stylist to only add a few layers, and to keep them near the tips of the hair. Otherwise, you may end up with a style that poofs around the ears, but falls flat at the top and bottom.

This style is also easy to create variations in. Try parting your hair in a different spot, or adding bangs for a custom style. Another great way to accent this particular look is by cutting the hair to frame the face. Make the taper dramatic, or you may end up with something reminiscent of a mullet.

3.) Waves. If your hair is somewhere between curly and straight, you might want to opt for a look that works with your natural waves. You can have your stylist chemically add a wave to enhance your hair’s natural tendencies in a more uniform manner. Pair the wavy tresses with a single layer, medium length hair cut and you’ve got the perfect summer style.

You can customize this look by adding in side bangs, or a couple of carefully placed layers in the front. Remember, the wave itself is the focal point, so be careful not to over style your hair with extra cuts and colors.

No matter which style you choose, medium-length hair is one of the most versatile styles available. If you’re not ready to give up your long, youthful locks just yet, consider trimming them back into something easier to care for that is just as beautiful. Hairstyles for women over 50 don’t have to be boring, so have fun with your look!
